The Riddell Collection of Wax Seals:
The Riddell Seal Box Reconstructed
introduction
According to the indexes they created for their collection of wax seals, the Riddell brothers kept the seals on cards within a box. We do not know what form the box took - whether for instance it was intended for display or for ease of reference. However, we do know that the cards were kept in a numerical order and individual seals made discoverable via an alphabetical index. An additional index listed the seals in pure numerical order. Here we attempt to reconstruct the original user experience of the seals box and its accompanying indexes. The cards themselves are presented in number order in online book reader format and in zoomable IIIF format, identifiable by the original Riddell number on each card where present. The final cards are unnumbered, as is the solitary example of a Burgess Ticket with its accompanying seal. We follow the cards with the Riddell alphabetical index and numerical index, each in online book reader format and zoomable IIIF format. Please note that not all of the original Riddell cards have survived and that therefore gaps exist in the card box as it exists today.
