Ignorance of the Loire is no excuse

  • The Signet Library West Parliament Square Edinburgh EH1 1RF (map)

A “Loire Valley” wines tasting, in partnership with L'Art du Vin wine merchants

The Loire Valley is France’s most diverse wine region, producing exemplary wines in every style, from mineral Muscadets in Nantes area, joyful Cabernets in Saumur district, elegant Sauvignons blancs in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé and lively Gamays further down in Ardèche. As for Chenins blancs, they are at their very best all along the way.

This variety has raised a growing interest with sommeliers and wine writers alike recently, and Loire Valley wines certainly share important characteristics for contemporary taste: moderate alcohol, refreshing acidity and minerality making them ideal as food wines; pure expression of cepages and terroir unmasked by oak; excellent value; suitability for both early consumption and longer aging.

Loire Valley wines are much worth exploring in depth, and so are their producers as the area has some of France’s most committed winemakers – and most appealing characters –, maintaining superb consistency along the years and laying the ground for the biodynamic wines revolution.

Fife-based wine merchants L’Art du Vin take us on tour with a six wines tasting. Expect some great stories and a few surprises. You won’t be blamed for ignoring the Loire after that, and might even end up booking a plane ticket straight away to depart to the “garden of France” for Christmas.
