VISIT OF THE SIR ROBERT MORAY SOCIETY TO THE SIGNET LIBRARY

Signet Library displays its copy of the National Covenant of 1638 for Society founded in honour of Jacobean Scottish intellectual.

On Thursday 25th April the Signet Library was honoured by a visit by delegates from the Sir Robert Moray Society. Society members record, celebrate and perpetuate the memory of the Jacobean Scottish intellectual and solder Sir Robert Moray FRS 1609-1673. Sir Robert fought in the Bishops’ Wars and was a pioneer member of the Royal Society. After a tour of the Library, delegates enjoyed an exhibition of Signet Library material relating to the Bishops’ Wars including pamphlet material, royal proclamations, engravings, a copy of the Laudian liturgy of 1637 and the Signet Library’s copy of the National Covenant of 1638. Most notable of the exhibition items was a manuscript diary of one of the framers of the Covenant, Sir Archibald Johnston, describing the events of the Bishops’ Wars at first hand.
